There is some kind of backup way to flash the ISP, but the same thing
happened to me. Look at the help file in AVR studio or search Atmel's
site.
BTW, I ended up just ordering a MkII from Digikey.

Subject: [DPRG] Frotzed my AVR ISP
OK, I finally got a free afternoon to devote to robot building.
I downloaded and installed the latest AVR studio, and it detected my
serial-port AVR ISP pod (an old one, in an opaque plastic case).
It then said it would have to update the firmware. After a while, it
gave a "verify failed" message.
Now, the red LED doesn't come on, and AVR studio doesn't recognize it.
Did I brick it, or is it salvageable? The 1200 and the 8535 are both
SMT devices.
I'm also having trouble with AVR studio connecting to my STK500 and my
Olimex JTAG ICE. Hmmm....
Any hints?
Thanks,
Jeff
