I had to go load the new version also.
You don't have as big of a problem as you think. What you see on the board are called "airwires". They just show what pins are connected. When you start routing the end point jumps to the closest pin that is on the same net. After placement you can click the "Ratsnest" button (it looks like an X) and it will minimize the length of the airwires.
So go ahead and do placement. Just drag your parts on to the board where you want them. And keep in mind that your right mouse button will rotate parts when you are dragging them.
Then you can start routing your traces.
