It's quite possible that you need to recalibrate your compass. If it
was bought someplace east of Seattle, it's quite possible that heading
north into Canada was enough to push it over the edge. The car
compasses usually only do 8 directions.
Check the owners manual for your vehicle. There is usually a section
that describes what you need to do to calibrate the compass. It
typically involves activating the calibration procedure and then
driving around in a circle on a level surface (like a parking lot).
My car compass works fine in southern BC and as far south as Oregon.
I've only been as far east as Calgary and it seemed fine there too,
but I expect that if I went much further east I'd need to recalibrate.
