Ron,
The mask could prevent eye burns but probably not the fume problem:
>From OSHA:
1. Acute exposure: Acute exposure to welding fumes can result eye, nose, and
throat irritation, fever, chills, headache, nausea, shortness of breath,
muscle pain, and a metallic taste in the mouth.
2. Chronic exposure: Chronic exposure to welding fumes can result in
respiratory effects including coughing, wheezing, and decreased pulmonary
function.
...
Ten out of twelve case- control studies showed an association between lung
cancer and exposure or employment as a welder.
....
Workers should use appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment
that must be carefully selected, used, and maintained to be effective in
preventing skin contact with welding fumes. The selection of the appropriate
personal protective equipment (PPE) (e.g., gloves, sleeves, encapsulating
suits) should be based on the extent of the worker's potential exposure to
welding fumes.

Hey Brian/Steve
I have an auto-dark helmet also.
I must profess I have only done about 2 linear feet of welding, but do seem
to recall a minor bit of the irritated eye syndrome that either Mike Dodson
or Dan Bucy mentioned when using auto-darkening helmet.
(I was doing conventional stick arc welding)
It is possible that I did not have the helmet set dark enough?
There is a slight lag in the darkening time on the helmets.
As I recall, more$$ can get you a "faster" helmet.
I found this real quick.
Maybe more research would be warranted??
