Hi Eric,
Something to throw in the pot... Hmmm, is that a solder pot? ;-)
I wrote the following article for the Seattle Robotics Society online
magazine back in '2000. I received a large amount of great feedback from
amateur robotics folk who used the methods described and wanted to share
their experiences. About a year after it was published, it got slash dotted
by a well respected guru and the reader list went through the roof. For
years and years after that the number of responses of people sharing success
stores has been quite high. Even now this many years later I still get at
least one/month down from the 40~50/mo that I was receiving steadily for
quite a long time, about 1/2 domestic and about 1/2 international. Some of
the contacts were to secure the rights to use the technology in commercial
designs and I can point to a number of items on the market that are direct
descendants of this article. Of course, there is NO technology in the
article, I only documented something that was being passed around from
person to person with the thought that it could benefit a large audience.

I sure hope this helps you make your decision.

I am working on laying out one of the boards for my thesis, and I have
no experience with surface-mount soldering. The processor that I am
using is available in DIP, TQFP, or MLF; how hard will it be to
hand-solder either the TQFP or MLF package? Also, which size of
resistors and such would you recommend?
