Hello Eric,
TQFP is not too difficult with the right equipment; namely, a decent fine tip soldering iron (Metcal/OKI) and a pair of tweezers with a rubber band around them to hold the componants in place. There are probably far better ways of doing it but I've recently had to learn how to do it in a hurry and that was what seemed to work. It worked so well in fact that somebody stole my little improvised tool ...
I used M0805 sized resistors which are small but usable. Far more important is a decent pad size on the boards.
