Brian,
 
I like to use a piece of 1/8" clear plexiglas or lexan. Use a hand tool or
CNC router to cut any holes and to cut out the necessary lettering in
reverse above each hole. The lettering should be cut only about halfway
through the material. When finished, you can take some paint and smear it
into the letter grooves, wiping off the excess from the surface. Depending
on what color you want the background to be, you can also spray paint the
back of the material over the lettering paint. When you flip the whole thing
over, you get a nice looking panel which is very durable because all of the
paint is on the backside.

I want to make a panel label / faceplate for a project.  I would think with
all the programs out there in cyberspace there is probably already something
that will do the job; I am just not familiar with any such products.  I want
to label knobs and switches, add text, and maybe even use some sort of
picture in the background.  I would probably use some type of stick on label
but I would consider a full faceplate also. Anybody got some experience in
this area or have some good ideas of what to look at?  I thought I saw a
Circuit Cellar article some months ago where the author did that kind of
thing, but I can't find it again.
