There is a lab class forming right now at my university to
attempt to make a Robomagellan robot with two students.

We took a lot of inspiration from jBot, and Dr. Huff's "Pig".
The chassis is a Traxxas Truck, but plan 4 wheel drive and
Ackerman stearing. They have the same IMU sensor as you (dpa)
use, the 3DM-GX1 from MicroStrain. We have Polaroid sonars, GPS
modules and Xbee modules for communications. Our (NMI) 'Pod's
will do the computing. They already bought the equipment
necessary for up to five robots, but putting it together and
getting working code is, as you know, a rather large challenge.

I doubt they will succeed in one semester, but it is at least
worth mentioning the effort has begun and has a slim chance of
competing in late spring.
