Mike,
I have used LTSpice/Switcher CAD III on a few occasions.

I just checked and they have an ideal 555 model in the library.
Pretty cool package.
I would recommend starting with a very simple design.
Package is pretty easy to learn.
Schematic capture is easy.
Took me a little time to get a handle on signal generators and plots.
Got bogged a few times on various details.
