Mike,
You can use just about any transistor you want here. The
current of a single LED will be much less than a motor, so you could use
a smaller MOSFET, or just a BJT like a 2n2222 or something.

I came across the article on using a 555 to make a PWM circuit.

I would like to use this to drive LEDs instead of a motor. Is there a
different transistor I should use instead of the IRFZ46N?
