Ron,

You can and should use whatever material you're most comfortable with and have 
the tools to manipulate.  Of course, don't let that stop you from buying more tools.

The old saying is "you can build a doghouse out of anything."  The dog is not 
going to mind much, either way.  Your first prototype, which may or may not ever 
see the light of day, falls into this category.  Jump in!  Just start gluing, 
nailing or taping things together and see what works best.

If you will be attending RBNO, I can show you some simple ways to mount the 
servos to each other or other pieces.  There's a good degree of latitude allowed.
