Yes, Dale, I've been using Xbee for a couple years now. The Xbee
Pro has an open field range up to 1.2miles. Less if there isn't
ground clearance. But typically at least a kilometer even on the
ground. Reliability is good. 6 channels with the Pro and 64K Pan
ID's if you want to be private.

We've got a USB Dongle adapter, and some adapters to our
PlugaPod(TM)s then some lower cost units which are just
carriers.
