Hi Dres, I'm adjunct faculty at Univ. of Northern Iowa, and
working there (over the internet) to establish improved
electronics and robotics courses. My main job is New Micros,
Inc., in Dallas. I am a supporter and occassional attendee of
the DPRG.

I like to use Mini Sumo to introduce students to basic robotic
principles. I got my first exposure to Mini Sumo at the DPRG
contests.

I have a couple students in a directed study lab planning to
travel to Dallas to participate in the outdoor challenge this
May.

Also Dr. Brian Huff of UT Arlington has attended several
contests with his students.

As I recall, teams from UT Austin have also come up to compete
occassionally.

Now at the contests, you will see grade schoolers, and high
schoolers, and college students and many pure hobbiests (long
past being formal students) competing together. So if your
students won't be mentally scarred by being beat by an 8 yo with
a Lego set and a couple years previous experience, sure, bring
them along.

The course is the competition, and even successfully completing
the couse is considered a victory by all who can do it, and many
try but do not conquer the courses, but still learn and have
fun. Some of the entry-level contests can be done at low level
of effort and polish. Any contest, however, even the simplest,
can be done at a academic to professional level, displaying a
great deal of relavant technology.
