A few days ago, there was also a story on the DPRG about the Essex RC
robot car contest and the machine learning (evolutionary) based control
strategy.

Thanks for these other links. They help clarify what is going on.
What I can not ascertain from these articles is how the Essex RC car
robots will use computer vision. It could be any of the following.
1. onboard camera with onboard computer vision processing and control
2. onboard camera using wireless for remote vision processing and control
3. external camera for remote vision processing and control
I have the impression that control is from a remote computer, not
onboard the robots. The main focus of research seems to be on machine
learning and control strategies evolved through machine learning
rather than computer vision. But it is never explicitly stated either
way. Maybe it is so obvious that everyone knows?
Some of the older work uses a remote computer driving the car with a
hacked RC radio. Computer vision is done from a camera high above the
race course with a bird's eye view to track the cars. At $2000 USD
for the Essex RC car platform, there is enough budget for a 1/8 scale
hobby grade RC vehicle with a small PC104 type single board computer.
So it could be done entirely onboard the robot.

The photographs of your club, Koen, remind me so much of the DPRG.
People and robots are very similar between the clubs. This is
interesting to see. Chris
