My thoughts are, if you are talking about an input voltage of say 7 or 8
volts -- don't even mess with switching regulator.

If you are talking 12 to 24 volts, then might be very handy for power loss
savings.

Most of the regulators I have seen require a few reasonably large 100 to 500
uF caps on input and output + a small inductor (100-200 uH), a Schottkey
diode, a few resistors including in some cases a low resistance shunt and a
timing capacitor.

One really inexpensive part is from TI, MC33063A/MC34063A available from
Mouser for about 80 cents in quantities of 25. Current rating about 500mA to
1.5A peek.

The app note added an extra cap and small inductor on output for further
filtering.

Saw another more Frisky device 3 Amps -- $2.75 for chip in 25 quan. (Mouser)

requires a 33uH inductor with ability to handle I would assume about 3 Amps.
