That's a really common reaction when the subject of emotion comes up in
the context of robotics or cognitive science, I think in part because
one of the stereotypes of science fiction is the emotionless machine. To
overcome that sort of reaction, you really have to think about what
emotion is, what it does, and where it came from.
In a case of remarkably good timing, a new article by Marvin Minsky was
posted recently on the very subject of emotions and feelings. I've never
found Minsky as compelling as Dennett on consciousness and I don't think
this article is as compelling as what I've read about Damasio on emotion
but it is interesting.
