I've often considered either machining a flat or utilizing an existing
flat on a motor shaft to provide tach info, if not incremental encoding,
but it simply never occurred to me to use a nut on the shaft.

Ironically, I have even purchased toothed lockwashers with tentative
plans to use them. BTW, they come in a wonderful variety...
