Howdy,
As I understand it, the original DPRG QuickTrip, TTime, and
CanCan contests were modified to use the current small course
because of the hassle of setting up and breaking down the old
larger course. As Ed and others have pointed out, it's easier
to administer but not nearly as exciting.
But we actually have a full sized contest course that is always
setup and ready to go. At the Warehouse. It is, in my humble
opinion, a more useful test bed for our robots than the miniature
course we currently use, and about which there is apparently so
little enthusiasm.
So following on from earlier comments about running robots in real-
world environments, I offer the following suggestions for DPRG
contests:
1. Go back to the full size course for QuickTrip, TTime, etc, and
hold those competitions at the warehouse.
2. Blow off CanCan. No robot has ever accomplised it in the 10 years
since SR04 first collected all 6 cans.
3. Design some new contests to be held at the Science Place which
require *NO* setup. I suggest three contests be considered:
a. Line following. There is a white curving line about 3 inches
wide that runs all the way across the main lobby, which is a
black marble floor. It represents the ecliptic against the
background of stars. Start at one end and go to the other.
b. Wall following. Start at one end of the lobby and follow the
walls to the other end. Some walls are glass, so this will be
quite a challenge.
c. Navigation. Start at one of the "planets" embedded in the
lobby floor and navigate to another and back. Or to several
and back.
d. Mini-sumo we can do anywhere, course requires essentially no
setup, and we already have several competitors.
4. The Long Haul competition around Fair Park is a good one but needs
more competitors. Perhaps a cash prize would motivate more entries?
Would $1000 first prize do it?
Please ponder these things and what sorts of robots you would like to
have to show off to your friends.
best regards,
dpa
