Even while the team has nice success, this site again demonstrates that
operational environments is very much a relative thing.
In the June 2006 section of this page
http://www.fieldrobot.wur.nl/robot1/index.htm outdoor temperatures above 30C
is identified as 'extreme.'
It isn't uncommon for my work area to hit 28C before I start thinking about
closing windows. The DPRG RBNO site probably exceeds 30C in the test area
on a regular basis.
Some of the photos on these sites capture bright sunny days but I wonder how
far out of operational spec the robots would be if placed under intense sun
in a cotton field in Lubbock.
One of our clients has us installing a mobile computing solution for crews
that work outdoors and that will see time in hot summers and mountain
winters. We are trying to stick with COTS gear and supporting -30C to 60C
is practical but doesn't quite cover the expected range. Even with these
parameters we've had no luck finding a Bluetooth radio in SD or CF form
factor that supports operating temps below -25C. Any leads would be much
appreciated.

Howdy,
Dr Frits K. van Evert and his students at the Wageningen University and
Research Center in the Netherlands have built a two-wheel balancing
robot to compete in the "field robot competitions." He sends along
a link to their robot navigating autonomously along rows of corn:
<http://www.fieldrobot.wur.nl/robot2/index.htm>
as well as a link to the field robot competition itself:
<http://www.fieldrobot.com/>
Looks like the navigation is accomplished with vision processing. In
one link we have a two-wheel balancing robot, vision processing, and
an outdoor real-world robot contest. A great job by our brother (and
sister) robot builders in the Netherlands.
best,
dpa
