Eric,
Are you sure which version of the MD22 you have?
I see (having scanned doc below quickly) they have added new modes where  one 
channel will do a shutdown until valid signal on other channel.
I assume you are trying channel 1..
 
Of course some of this may not apply to your MD22.

I can bring my MD22 robot to RBNO.
 
I have only used I2C and analog input modes on MD22 -- never RC servo  pulse.
