Jeff, The Acroname BrainStem module uses a MAX232 (or look-a-like) chip
powered by 5 volts from host.
The module, brings out 4 pins +5, GND, RX (TTL) and TX (TTL) that plugs
into a male 4 pin header.
By the way (I never thought about this in the past), RTS and CTS use a
buffer and a driver and are brought out as pads on the module (on the TTL side).
Maybe best to jumper there to prevent driver contention.
I did this (jumpered on RS-232 side) without thinking. Wonder about excess
current consumption....
By the way I have used one of these on every microcontroller board I have
built / bought over the past several years. They are a big time saver if you are
wiring up microcontroller board from scratch (about $10 or $11 each)
