Hey Micheal,
Thanks for joining DPRG!
Cool, you are playing with ATMega8
I have enjoyed playing with AVRs everything from Tiny12 on up to Mega2561
over the past 4 years.
Are you using a C compiler? if not:
I have been using WinAVR and Atmel AVR Studio for some time.
WinAVR is a free suite of tools, built around GCC C Compiler with lots of
add on goodies.
AVR Studio serves as an IDE and takes care of make file generation.
Best I can tell AVR Studio's automatic make file generation is easier than
using WinAVR's
tools.
Another interesting tool is AtmanAvr C. which is an IDE that works with GCC.
It provides setup menus for different AVR devices making it easy to
configure timers/interrupts... I used tool quite a bit in the past.
