The thing you're missing with series elastic actuators is that, in addition
to providing this "springy" control, they provide a mechanism to measure
the amount of "springyness" that the actuator is experiencing.
This allows for all kinds of nice stuff, like force control, and making a
totally compliant limb that can be positioned externally.
