Karel Čapek would beg to differ. :) He needed a word to describe
humanoid machines with human-like intelligence and coined "robot" for
the job. We've stretched the meaning quite a bit since then to include
sub-human levels of intelligence but I'm not willing to completely
discard the original meaning yet.

On the other hand, I'm perfectly happy to agree that building machines
based on animal behavior is very useful and practical for hobbyists like
ourselves. My own little robot will be making the 10 foot there and back
trip at this month's contest. I don't think it could be described as
autonomous yet but it is making incremental progress. I've named it
Robozoa in the optimistic hope that it will eventually attain a level of
intelligence comparable to a protozoa. I guess technically the Protista
kingdom aren't consider animals anymore are they?

Last time I posted about it, someone asked for a photo. There are a
couple in the photo gallery for the Tanner 2007 robot show:

At the last RBNO, I sorted out a few more mechanical problems like loose
screws and a reversed connection from one of the shaft encoders. I also
did a rough calibration of the encoders - 472 ticks per inch. Tomorrow's
project is to get dead reckoning working well enough for the 10 foot
trip at the monthly mini-contest.
