[DPRG] SLA Batteries

Hello Kip,

I don't know what's proper, but I've taken old sealed lead acid
batteries that were apparently dead, and put them on a trickle charger
(my "trickle charger" for this purpose is a bench supply with a meter
and a settable current limit with an external power resistor).

Most of the batteries charged in this manner went up to a level that
indicated that at least one of the cells was dead, and I discarded
them. However, I have had a few batteries that charged up just fine,
and worked well after that.

I don't remember reading any voltage less than a volt, though. I seem
to remember seeing 1.XX volts (for a 12V battery) more than once, and
being successful. I've always done this when I've been in the room
with them, in case they suddenly get "highly exothermic" (never
happened with an SLA, but has happened once with a NiMH and once with
a NiCAD pack).

YMMV,
Jeff
