Are they completely sealed? If not, try dumping the electrolyte and
flushing the chambers, then replacing the electrolyte. Residue tends to
accumulate and pile up against the plates after a long and fruitful life.
Bear in mind that the electrolyte is fairly destructive acid. Handle
with care.
If they're sealed or use gelled electrolyte (gel-cell) you're planning a
trip to the battery store, I'm afraid.
