Like Ed Paradis, I'm full of praise for the basic idea here, and
how it should help people get ahead in robot navigation if they
can progress through the points you suggest in your post.

However, I got to thinking about this first task, driving in a
straight line. I think there's a misnomer there right from the
start, and if there is, that's why many are not successful.

I spent quite a bit of time trying to make my robots drive in
straight lines. Eventually I found out I couldn't. I couldn't
hold the parameters tight enough in an irregular world that it
would actually go straight. (And it's even harder to do outside
on rough surfaces than inside on smooth floors.) Then I made my
robots steer for a point. That worked. Now they appear to go
straight, but what they are actually doing is steering for a
point.

Dpa: Do you really try to make your robot drive straight? Or
have you taught it to steer straight?

I suspect the experts here know what I mean, but, any beginners
confused by the difference in trying to make your robot go
straight, and having your robot steer straight?
