Ed,
David just beat me to this recommendation. This really is the way to go if
you can take the price hit or have the time to wait on the samples. looking
at it from an efficiency stand point using one of these guys will literally
double the life of your battery over a linear or low drop out and since TI
has done all the work of building it into a linear module it couldn't be
easier to use. I use the 12 pin brother to this in most of my projects and
it really is worth the time. If you need less than 1.5A, in a 3 pin
package, give them a look. If you don't want to wait for samples and feel
extra rich, digikey carries them.
-Woo Hoo, woke up to the first snow of the season. Hmm I wonder how many
seconds this excitement will last?
-Kenneth

Howdy
Ed, I've used the little "Power Trends" switchers from
TI that are drop-in replacements for 7805 three-terminal
regulators: PT78ST105
http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/print/pt78st105.html
Up to 38 volts DC input, supplies 5 volts at 1.5 amps.
I think they were about $18 last time I looked, but I've
always gotten them through TI's "samples" for free. I think
they'll give you two.
best
