Open the circuit (keeping probes across motor) and you will see back EMF --
of course the motor will slow down, but if you periodically open the
circuit, say with variable duty square wave from your microcontroller through your
h-bridge you can measure back EMF with say an A to D converter on your
micro-controller while keeping the motor running.
Acroname (_www.acroname.com_ (http://www.acroname.com/) ) sells an h-bridge
/ motor driver that provides this functionality.
I would bet an encoder is a better way to go for accuracy -- especially if
you are interested in doing odometry.
