Howdy
Ed, I've used the little "Power Trends" switchers from
TI that are drop-in replacements for 7805 three-terminal
regulators: PT78ST105

Up to 38 volts DC input, supplies 5 volts at 1.5 amps.
I think they were about $18 last time I looked, but I've
always gotten them through TI's "samples" for free. I think
they'll give you two.
