Consider pilot training requirements
http://www.risingup.com/fars/info/part61-109-FAR.shtml
"(ii) One solo cross-country flight of at least 150 nautical miles total distance, with full-stop landings at a minimum of three points, and one segment of the flight consisting of a straight-line distance of at least 50 nautical miles between the takeoff and landing locations;"
A three leg cross country will tell if a pilot can navigate or not. Out and back is just a warm up for this later test.
Same should be true for robots. Three points (preferably not colinear). Full stops. Even better if they drop off, or pick up something proving they've been there. (With student pilots, they are required to get signatures in their log books from someone on the ground.)
