I am one of the adults sponsors for a BEST team. We are located in Mt.
Vernon, Texas (about 100 miles east of Dallas). I can tell you from
last years event the amazing results this program generates.
We had 7 kids last year. Mostly the same group I had when they were 11
& 12 year olds and we did the First Lego competition. They did a great
job. This year we had 25 kids show up for our kickoff meeting. That is
95% word of mouth. The students from last year spoke and they conveyed a
real excitement. The students involved in this are a cross section of
our school. Band, Football, Ag, Computer Science, Cheerleaders,
Photojournalism... There are even some who are not involved in anything
else. What other school activity can claim this?
The students showed up at school early, stayed late and came in on
Saturdays & even Sunday sometimes. They called us to come unlock the
doors! What other school activity can claim this?
This activity involves the community and cost the school nothing. $0.
What other school activity can claim this?
I have talked to some of the team about coming to a monthly meeting of
the DPRG.
If you want to support the future engineers, teachers and amateur robot
builders, this is the place to be!
I am a computer programmer and lame robot builder. We have a dedicated
science teacher and a couple of committed parents, but we need real
robot builder/engineer types.
I know we are a little far from the DPRG, but there are teams in your
area. If you happen to live in East Texas or would consider coming to
East Texas, we need you! If you can, we would even come to your
location. You are invited to contact me and we will work out our
schedule to accommodate you. AND, You get a cool t-shirt!
BTW, financial sponsors are also needed. This program is free to the
school, but not completely free (t-shirts, pizza and pace pipe cost
money).
