I recently worked on a similar project. I ended up using scooter motors.

These are nice because they have easy-to-use mounting points and no
roller-clutch.

My bot weighs-in around 120lbs, and moves around quickly on smooth
surfaces - so you can probably use much smaller motors - but the scooter
motors are cheap, and you can find complete drive systems pretty easily.

I purchased them from allelectronics.com, along with a couple of 12V
batteries for around $50 I think. Ebay has them for $18.

But I recommend purchasing your drive system as a set. Get the
motor/gearbox/wheels or the motor/chain/sprocket/wheel or ../belt/wheel...
whatever - buy it all together. I wasted some time and money buying all
these things individually.

Also, alot of these scooter motors come with a roller clutch on the shaft
that acts like a freewheel. So you wont be able to do skid steering /
tank-style steering without modifying the shaft of the motor.

My experience tought me that you dont want to spend time on the mechanical
part - you want to get the easiest machine you can rolling, and then work on
the hard part.
