I got a new AVR toy to play with. It's the AVRUSBKEY (pronounced AVR USB KEY).
It is a demo unit for the new AT90USB1287 device. You plug it in to a USB
port and it appears a USB composite device. It supports USB 2.0 in low & full
speeds (1.5 & 12Mb/s) as well as USB OTG. It can be programmed to be a USB
device or limited host. It has a USB bootloader for flashing new firmware to
the chip.
The AT90USB1287 has a regular AVR core, 128K flash program memory, 8k bytes of
RAM, 4b bytes of EEPROM, and 48 I/O lines, plus all the other normal goodies.
It can run up to 16MHz.
The demo unit adds 16MB of flash memory, so it looks like a thumb drive when you
plug it into your PC. It doesn't need any special drivers, as it supports the
HID interface and storage classes. All the documentation comes installed on the
device. The demo unit also has a couple of red/green LEDs and a 5 way joystick
button. They include two USB cables. One is a standard A to mini B to connect
to your PC. The other is a mini B to A female to connect to other USB
peripherals, along with a 9V battery clip for powering the device (and USB
peripherals). You can only hook up one at a time - it can be either a device or
a host, but not both at the same time - I think.
The really cool part is that it is $30 from Digikey. I've only scratched the
surface with this thing yet, but I plan on bringing it up to RBNO tomorrow night
if anyone else wants to take a look at it. I'll try not to "improve" it too
much before then so you can see the thumb-driveness and simultaneous green LED
blinkiness of it. I might solder the JTAG connector on it, but I don't have the
0.050" spaced headers that the 6 I/O ports are brought out on.
Thanks,
