The juggernaut is coming. MS has entered the fray. They've released their Robotics Studio SDK CTP. I'm just starting to look at this and some of it seems very nice for my windows-based bots. Specifically the CCR and how it implements coordination of work items in a way that naturally minimizes deadlocks. Realize that right now this is about how to control a robot from the windows platform and it's not a framework that runs on the microcontroller - though they may get it to run on windows-mobile-type devices soonish.

In many ways the look like they are still catching up with dpa's practical experience. In others they are building a framework for tackling problems of large-scale control software integration that are still in the future for the whole field (imho). The big risk, though, is that they are not (yet?) releasing the source code.
For the ARM I'm looking at using FreeRTOS as the operating environment. Has anyone here implemented FreeRTOS on the ARM for robotics purposes?
