The Circuit Cellar article "A Low Cost Laser Range Finder" was published in
1994. It was written by Tom Ward of Brisbane Australia. I have a
preliminary version of the article instead of the published version, so I do
not know what month it was published. The range finder used about $150
worth of parts and used triangulation. It is an excellent design and the
article has full details including source code. Since it was designed for a
micro mouse it has a very short maximum range, but could be easily changed
for longer range.
Sharp Electronics Corporation makes some cheap triangulation range finders.
Uses an LED instead of a laser. Cost is about $15, maximum usable range is
about 30 inches.
