A big brother of that sensor that I use for the Educators Line Follower package I'm building, is the QRB1114.
It is about 1 inch tall and has a focal distance of over 5/16 inch. The QRD1114 is about 2-3/16 inch focal distance.
It also works well with the BS2 input. I use a comparator to convert the Analog level to an adjustable digital level.
Do a search at www.digikey.com or www.mouser.com to find them.
Regards,
Robert

I use the Fairchild QRD1114 -- you need a couple of resistors and thats all.
Its a reflective photodiode / phototransistor pair that works well with a
Basic Stamp on the black material and white tape used on the DPRG events. We
tested it at work on grey carpet and masking tape and it workd there too.
You do have to get it pretty close to the floor, but no big deal.

What kind of a sensor could I use to distinguish black from white. I'm
looking at a few sensors, but I don't really understand what I should be
looking for. Is a photosensor the same as a reflective sensor?? Is there a
book that can explain sensors in better detail for me??
