I am going to try to keep people updated daily with the latest info with
the Pepsi Kid-Around.
===============================================
New stuff since yesterday:
Any more volunteers? Currently I could use one more person on Sunday at
1:30, Monday at 1:30, and Monday at 5:30.
I guess Friday we will meet at 7:00 p.m. as originally planned.
Only comment I got on the directions were how to get there from the
tollway. It has been added to the directions. Thanks Cari.
No response to the question: can any of you bring your robots that are
not signed up to volunteer?
Still looking for a portable computer for Friday night. With Word or
Powerpoint we can print a lot of information. I can bring my printer and
we can make more info for people.
================================================
It is this weekend everyone!
Friday 7:00 p.m. Setup
Currently I have Eric Yundt, Ralph Tenny, Kevin Carter, Jim Brown and
myself planning to be there for the setup. This will be our chance to
see the setup and make modifications and find out what else is needed.
I will check it out at about noon and let everyone else know if
we need anything special or unexpected.
If anyone else wants to come, let me know. If we finish our stuff
early, they will probably like a little help with the rest of the
Kid-Around setup. Last year they did not have many people helping with
the setup and we were there until 11:30 p.m.
Saturday, 9:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. there is Bill James, Jim Brown, Alan
Bredon, and Bob Jordan signed up. I will be there at about 1:00 or as
soon as I can after rehearsal.
Saturday 1:00 p.m. - 5:45 p.m. Eric Yundt, Ed Koffman, Clay Timmons, Jim
Brown, and I will be there. This was the busiest time last year.
Another person could be used if you want.
Ed Rivers said he would be there "sometime Saturday" I would prefer a
more definitive commitment, from you Ed. When can we count on you?
Sunday 9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Eric Yundt, Danny Black, Bill James, Brad
Gorton, and James Vroman are signed up. I will be there also. This is
well covered.
Sunday 1:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Eric Yundt, Ed Koffman, David Anderson are
signed up. I will be there and I don't know about Jim. This is
probably covered O.K. One Person more if Jim can't make it would be
nice.
Monday 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Craig Renolds, Danny Black, Jim Brown, and
Clay Timmons, are signed up, and I will be there also. This is covered
O.K.
Monday 1:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. Ralph Tenny, Jim Brown, Barry Jordan, and
Alan Brendon (?) are signed up, and I will be there until 5:30 p.m. (I
have rehearsal at 7:00 in Garland, and will need to shower first). This
session still needs another person.
Monday Break Down 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. or so. Eric Yundt, Danny Black,
Ralph Tenny are signed up. I would like at least another person. This
involves, taking down everything, taking the chairs to a central
location, Taking the tables to a central location, Taking everything off
the tent, and probably disassembling anything else. They use heavy
plastic wire ties to hook everything up, so bring a sharp knife or
diagonal cutters to help take things down. Once we are done, we need to
be good guys and help take down the rest of the place. Tear down goes
very fast, especially if you have a knife or diagonal cutters. (Be sure
you label yours.)
Directions:
It is called Reverchon Park, located on the corner of Maple Ave and
Turtle Creek (Mapsco 45A)
If you are coming from I35 take Oaklawn East (past Infomart and Scottish
Rite Hospital) to Maple Ave, Turn Right On Maple and it is about three
blocks. Across the street from the park is a parking structure that we
can use to park in all weekend.
If you are coming on the Tollway, take the Wycliff exit off of the
Tollway. Turn right on Wycliff then one street down is Maple and turn
Left. Take Maple under to Tollway and past Oak Lawn and the park would
just be a few blocks down on the right.
If you are coming from Central Expressway, take Lemmon Ave Exit and
Lemmon Ave, Down the hill to Turtle Creek. Turn Left on Turtle Creek
and follow it to the end. There is unfortunately, one tricky
intersection at the intersection of Cedar Springs, If you are on Turtle
Creek and go straight it becomes Cedar Springs Rd. You must turn right
to stay on Turtle Creek. It is marked, but watch for it.
There are two entrances. The main entrance is at the intersection of
Turtle Creek and Maple Ave, this is the paying entrance, you do not want
to go there. The Volunteer entrance is about 100 feet up Maple Ave.
Across from the parking structure. The entrance is well marked. I
will make sure they have a list with our volunteer's names on it.
During the operating times, no automobiles are allowed in the park (too
many kids), so if you have a large robot (like Alan's) it has to get
there real early or we need to figure out how to get it to the booth.
Let me know if we have to do something special.
I do not have anyone except myself signed up for demo's. I will bring 3
hall effect demo's. I need more. The little IR PROXIE detector that
lights up an LED when your hand gets near would be fun, but noone has
signed up, likewise no sonar. Let me know if you have something cool to
demo.
Looking at the Robot List, it does not look like there are a lot of
robot's but looking at the people there should be. I am assuming that
everyone will be bringing all of their robots for their shift. If you
have a robot and can not attend, but would like us to show it let me
know. We will take good care of it.
Channel 8 is a sponsor of the event and will cover it. They will also
have a 30 minute show about the Kid-Around this Friday at 6:30 p.m. Set
your VCR's.
Jim is bring a cooler for drinks and stuff. There are consession
stands, with food and drinks at the event, and if I remember correctly,
the prices are reasonable (not like the Ballpark or Texas Stadium).
Remember bring Pepsi products or drink non-Pepsi drinks from Pepsi cups.
Pepsi is a big sponsor.
Remember, this is outdoors all day long. Drink plenty of liquids, and
bring sun screen. There is shade, but it is still hot. Wear a hat, it
helps.
