DPRG: Robot Vacuum Contest to be held in Atlanta

Subject: DPRG: Robot Vacuum Contest to be held in Atlanta
From: Calvin Grier cgrier at reptron.com

With less than 5 months to go the Atlanta Hobby Robot Club is really
excited about our first Annual Vacuum Robot Contest. The contest will be
held in Atlanta's beautiful SciTrek Museum in conjunction with our yearly
robot show-off and contest, the Robot Rally. The 1998 Robot Rally held in
January had an estimated attendance of 800 adults and children, with media
coverage in the local papers and on TV.

Robotic creations will attempt the task of vacuuming a simulated room,
complete with lamp, chair and speaker. The dimensions of the room will be
kept to a small 8 foot square in order to reduce the time required to run
the course.

Each robot will be given the task of vacuuming 1/2 pound of rice from
office type carpet. The robot that finishes with the most rice and the
shortest time wins. Bonus points will be awarded for the robots unaided
return to the start box "recharging station". The robot weight will also be
a factor since the average homeowner will need to be able to port the robot
>from room to room or floor to floor in an average house.

Specifics about the contest can be found at
http://www.idea-vision.com/robot

We encourage anyone and everyone who can meet the contest requirements to
enter. Please note that the rules are still subject to small changes, and
we are open to suggestions for making the contest a fun and entertaining
exhibition.
