I think the Car strter motor is probably overkill. A better choice would be those motors used for winding windows up and down. I have several of these, they run on 12v and are very strong. The two brands I have are DENSO and ASMO.

The DENSO is slower, but I think it has more torque (don't know, haven't used the DENSO's yet).

The ASMO is faster, but still very strong. Both of these motors are about 6 inches long and 3 inches tall, by abot 1.5 inches thick. This is the gear case and the motor. They have three mounting holes, and are right angle drive.

I bought them from All Electronics for 17 bucks each, you may find them elsewhere for cheaper. But thats got to be cheaper than a car starter motor.

I am building a Big Crab like robot, with 8 legs. I plan to use these motors for the hip joint, and a smaller motor for the foreleg movemnet. I haven't decided if I should build it with 2 or 3 degress of motion for each leg. More DOF's = more money, more power, thus bigger batteries, etc.,.

I won't done for a while (what else is new!)
