DPRG: duplicate messages

Looks like there was a fender-bender on the information highway last night
between why.net and dprg.org. I haven't sorted out quite what happened but
I know the mail server at why.net has been dead for a couple of days and
Jim's mail has been queued up there. Looks like why.net somehow managed to
send two copies of some (but not all) of his messages out when it came back
up and Majordomo decided to get in on the act and make a bazillion duplicates
of all of the messages it received from why.net for several hours. From the
log it appears some people on the list were getting only 2 or 3 copies of
each message and others were getting as many as 5 or 6! Looks like each time
the list started to cycle and produce a new wave of duplicates, it didn't
bother to finish going through the list of subscribers - it just stopped
where ever it happened to be and went back to the top of list again. I
haven't found the cause but the original offending messages have been flushed
and Majordomo has been rebooted. Sorry about the huge pile of duplicates that
went out!
On the chance that something like this happens again, my office number here
is 972-650-2002. If somebody notices a problem with the list or the dprg
web site, don't hesitate to call and ask for Steve. If it's late at night,
I probably won't be here. (then again, you never know...)
